ROCK N ROLL TIMES
RARE DYLAN AND CASH
Opening: Bob Dylan’s “I Forgot to Remember to Forget” (basement tapes album on Columbia legacy) Disc 1 track 6 3:17
Commentary: After playing my favorite albums of 2014 last month, I decided to play my favorite retrospective of 2014 today.
I’m talking about Bob Dylan and the Band’s The Basement Tapes Complete, a six disc set. It contains music made in the 1960s in upstate New York when Dylan was taking a break.
Rather than focus on the songs Bob and the Band wrote during that period, I’m going to play some of the cover versions they did—music they chose to do for fun, or to warm up with, during the sessions.
We opened the show with their version of one of the most important and overlooked Elvis Presley hits on Sun Records. The song was I Forgot to Remember to Forget, which showcased Elvis’ country instincts. The record was by far his biggest hit on Sun. It was no. 1 for five weeks on the country charts.
In fact, before going to the basement tapes, let’s play Elvis’ version of the song as well as his version of A Fool Such as I, which Dylan and the band later play as well. We’ll also play two Hank Williams versions of songs that are found in the basement tapes set.
Block 1:
Elvis Presley’s “I Forgot to Remember to Forget” (sunrise on RCA) track 7 2:23
Elvis Presley’s “A Fool Such as I” (50 million fans on RCA) track 9 2:36
Hank Williams’ “My Bucket’s Got a Hole in It” ( HW: The ultimate Collection) disc 1 track 8 2:31
Hank Williams’ “You Win Again” (same) disc 1 track 22 2:35
Commentary: We just heard You Win Again and My Bucket’s Got a hole in it by Hank Williams and A Fool Such as I and I forgot to remember to forget by elvis Presley.
Now let’s hear Dylan and the Band play three of those songs plus I Don’t Hurt Anymore, which was originally recorded by Hank Snow.
Block 2:
Bob Dylan’s “My Bucket’s Got a Hole in It” (basement) disc 1 track 1 1:30
Bob Dylan’s “You Win Again” (basement) disc 1 track 7 2:40
Bob Dylan’s “A Fool Such as I” (basement) track 16 2:54)
Bob Dylan’s “I Don’t Hurt Any More” (basement) track 19 2:12
Commentary: Let’s continue with more music from the Basement tapes. The songs are Cool Water, first recorded by the sons of the pioneers and Big River and Folsom Prison Blues both hits for johnny Cash.
Block 3:
Dylan’s “Cool Water” (basement) disc 1 track 18 3:01
Dylan’s “Big River” (basement) disc 1 track 11 2:20
Dylan’s “Folsom Prison Blues’ (basement) disc 1 track 12 2:44
Commentary: That was more music by bob Dylan and the band’s the basement tapes complete album. Now, let’s go back to another informal recording session to sample Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash in the same relaxed spirit as the basement tapes. These tracks were recorded in Nashville in 1969—and have only been released in bootleg.
I’m sure Columbia will eventually release them on an album. They are too historic to be left in the vault.
So, here’s bob Dylan and Johnny Cash on some Cash material.
Block 4:
Dylan and Cash’s “Big River” (on Dylan/Cash Sessions album) track 7 1:57
Dylan and Cash’s “Guess Things Happen that way” (Dylan cash album) track 12 1:47
Dylan and Cash’s “I Walk the Line” (Dylan/cash) track 9 2:41
Dylan and Cash’s “I Still Miss Someone” (Dylan/cash) track 3 2:29
Commentary: Now, let’s hear Johnny and Bob doing some Dylan material, namely one too many mornings and girl from the North Country.
Block 5:
Dylan and Cash’s “One Too Many Mornings” (from Dylan/Cash sessions) track 1 3:55
Dylan and Cash’s “Girl From the North Country” (Dylan/cash) track 8 3:45
Commentary: To close the show, we’re going to play as much as we can of Dylan and Cash’s delightful versions of Elvis’s first Sun recording, That’s All Right” and then their rendition of the country standard, Careless love.
Closing:
Dylan and Cash’s “That’s All Right” (Dylan cash) track 6 2:44
Dylan Johnny Cash’s “Careless Love” ((Dylan cash) track 4 7:05
