The ABCs of Rock Bands:
On my radio show, “Rock ‘n’ Roll Times with Robert Hilburn” (Sundays at 4 p.m. on KCSN 88.5 in Los Angeles) I went through my own ABCs of rock bands--listing my favorite for each letter of the alphabet. We got such great response that I’m going to do the ABCs of Solo Artists next. It’ll be one list covering men and women and along with rock, will include country, pop, hip-hop and R&B. You can stream the show each week at www.kcsn.org or listen to past broadcasts by clicking on http://rocknrolltimes.kcsn.org
Here are my favorite bands--one for each letter of the alphabet, well two in the case of the letters A and W. It was too hard to list just one band for those so I named both a pre- and post-1980 band for each. I probably could have done it for other letters too, but I thought it was a little bit of a cop-out. So, I limited the number of dual choices to just those two.
Remember, these are MY favorite my bands for each letter; I’m not arguing that they are the best or the most influential--just the ones I’d most want to see at their peak. Some are predictable and led to some outrage among KCSN listeners--especially the choice of Guns ‘n Roses. The Deadheads objected strongly. "But remember," I emailed them back, "it is MY favorite band."
A ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND (pre-1980)
ARCADE FIRE (post-1980)
B The Beatles
C Creedence Clearwater Revival
D The Doors
E The Eagles
F The Flying Burrito Brothers (complaints here from Fleetwood Mac fans)
G Guns ‘n Roses
H The Jimi Hendrix Experience
I The Impressions with Curtis Mayfield

L Led Zeppelin
M Bob Marley & the Wailers
